• House Advances Bill to Ban E-Gaming
WASHINGTON -- By voice vote, a House subcommittee on Tuesday passed a bill to prohibit Internet gambling by outlawing payment of online wagers via credit cards, checks or electronic fund transfers.

The vote by the House Judiciary subcommittee on crime, terrorism and homeland security advances the bill by Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, to the full committee where a more extensive debate is expected.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., who offered a tougher alternative to Leach's bill two years ago, urged the subcommittee to support the Iowan's bill.

"(The Leach bill) is intended to make it crystal clear that operating a gambling business on the Internet is illegal," said Goodlatte, who replaced an ailing Rep. Howard Coble, R-N.C., as the chairman of Tuesday's hearing.

Leach's bill passed the House Financial Services Committee last month by voice vote. A similar bill by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., is awaiting a vote by the Senate Banking Committee. [...]

• Britian Leading Online Betting
UNITED KINGDOM -- As reported by the Economist: "Who will win the race to dominate the global betting industry, and take billions in prizes? On current form, the hot favourite is Britain, thanks to a mixture of history, enterprise and legislation. Global gambling is on the rise chiefly because of technology, which makes it possible to place bets cheaply over long distances. That allows people in countries where betting and gambling are either corrupt (as in many east Asian countries) or crippled by legislation (as in America) to move their business to friendlier environments.

"Britain's first big advantage is a good reputation abroad. Place a bet in a betting shop, and you have someone solid to complain to if something goes wrong.

"...By abolishing betting tax in October 2001, the government has brought almost all British-owned off-shore betting businesses back to this country: turnover has risen from £8 billion ($13 billion) to £15 billion, of which a big chunk—up to a third on big events—is already wagered from abroad. • Las Vegas Goes Sex Mad
Treasure Island, the Las Vegas hotel-casino, is to replace their popular family pirate attraction with the 'Sirens of TI', sexy vamps who duel pirates in what Treasure Island calls a 'sensual modern interpretation' of the old 'Battle of Buccaneer Bay.'

Treasure Island President Scott Sibella described the old show as 'a little tired,' and in need of a facelift. The original show has been around since the hotel opened in 1993. Sibella: 'We are not changing the name. It will always be Treasure Island. What we're trying to do is have a trendier and sexier name.'

A convention and visitors authority study shows only 10 percent of the people who visited Las Vegas in 2002 were travelling with people younger than 21. MGM’s Alan Feldman: 'The notion of Las Vegas being a family place was mythical. What Las Vegas has always been is bringing out the kid in the adult, not asking adults to bring their kids.' [...]

• Atlantic Battle for Online Jackpot Dominance
Two mega-jackpot winners in one week from both sides of the Atlantic take $203,149.81 in InterCasino progressive jackpots. The first winner was British slot player 'Suzilou' who was smiled on by the slot gods to the tune of an instant $68,203,10. But not to be outdone, player 'Rhocro' from North America took home an earth trembling $134,946.71 just a few days later.

How did Rhocro almost double Suzilou's jackpot, it wasn't just luck, she simply got onto the InterCasino Shoot-O-Rama video slot machine when its jackpot was busting to pay out. The Shoot-O-Rama progressive jackpot resets to a default value of only $2,000, so when it climbs to stratospheric $134,946.71, Rhocro knew that she was onto a great value machine. [...]
