• N.J. legislators call for study of Internet gaming

TRENTON - A state Assembly committee wants to study the possibility of legalizing and regulating Internet gaming in New Jersey. Although it is illegal in the United States, about 1,800 off-shore companies generate billions in Internet gaming dollars each year. About 60 percent of that revenue comes from the United States, where gambling on the Web is just a pop-up ad away. "Internet gambling is not coming, its here," said Assemblyman Anthony Impreveduto, D-Hudson. "Certainly, we're in a budget crunch. Internet gaming is a place to find that revenue." Impreveduto's bill - which now goes to the full Assembly and then the Senate for approval - sets up a 21-member commission to review the prevalence, status and growth of Internet gaming. The commission will also study the impact Internet gaming has on minors and the pros and cons of regulating the industry. The state's Office of Legislative Services projects that Internet gambling revenue will grow to $4.1 billion this year. That number is expected to triple by 2006. [...]

• US Gambling market grows

Americans spent $63.3 billion on gambling in 2002, all across the country, according to a study made by Christiansen Capital Advisors (CCA) of New York. The study reports that at any time day or night people are buying lottery tickets, bingo cards, making sports bets, playing the casinos online and off, and spending money, too, on their office pools. Virtually every form of gambling is popular and growing in popularity. Sinclair notes that his multi-billion dollar figure above represents only legal gambling. Popular illegal gambling includes sports bets, dice games, poker games, numbers (illegitimate lotteries) and dog fights. “It wasn''t always so,” said Sinclair, “While lotteries helped rebuild the South after the Civil War,” Sinclair said, “state-sponsored gambling all but disappeared between 1890 and 1964, when New Hampshire approved a lottery. New York followed suit in 1967. Since then, lotteries, off-track betting, keno and video poker have spread to all states except Utah and Hawaii. Even the Defense Department operates 8,000 slot and video machines at overseas bases.”

• Casino Kept My £32,000 Jackpot

A gambler claims a casino are refusing to pay him £32,000 he won on a roulette machine. Shop owner Talat Chelik hit the jackpot at a casino in Edinburgh's York Place but bosses refused to hand over the cash. His win came during a seven-hour gambling session on the automatic roulette machine, with his total standing at £32,774.50. But Mr Chelik will have to wait until an internal probe is completed before he knows if he will receive any money.It is understood a possible fault in the machine is being investigated by the casino operators. Mr Chelik, of South Gyle, Edinburgh, has a receipt for the windfall amount which he insists was issued by the machine. [...]
