• Opposing I-gaming Bills to Be Heard Next Week in US Congress

Next week has the potential to be a big week in the history of I-gaming legislation as two competing bills take center stage in a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee. The Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security has scheduled a hearing for April 29 at 2 p.m. EST. During the hearing, two bills will be discussed: HR 21, from Rep. James Leach, R-Iowa; and HR 1223, which was introduced by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich. Leach's bill is the latest incarnation of legislative efforts during the last new years to make Internet gambling illegal in the United States. The bill would prohibit online gambling merchants from accepting credit cards, electronic money transfers and a variety of other bank instruments as payment from U.S. residents. The Leach bill was passed March 13 by a voice vote in the Financial Services Committee. The totals of that vote were not recorded. The new CitizenCard is Experian’s solution to online age and identity fraud. Experian is a world leader in fraud prevention, and their new invention called interactiveAgeCheck (iAC) is set to turn the faceless internet on its head. The CitizenCard is a voluntary ID card that takes information provided at the time of CitizenCard registration and cross-references it against public databases to confirm that the card holder is over eighteen years of age. That card can then be used at online casinos to prove that the player is indeed of legal age to qualify for play. The protection of minors has always been a concern of online casinos who vigorously warn minors not to use their sites or download their software. To date there have been very few cases of minors gambling online, but according to online operators, even one minor gambling is too many. The 34th annual World Series of Poker at Binion's Horseshoe is expected to draw as many as 8,000 players from around the globe as well as hundreds of tourists who will watch an event that has become the gambling industry's top spectator sport.
