Senators Oppose New 'Net Gambling Measure |
WASHINGTON -- A Senate panel quickly and unanimously passed a bill Thursday aimed at crippling Internet gambling through banning the use of credit cards, checks or money transfers to place or pay out bets. With the House's approval of a similar bill in June, Thursday's action moves the bill closer to final approval than ever before.
But a last-minute change removing language that would allow states to legalize the practice within its boundaries, made through an amendment by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sen. Richard Shebly, R-Ala., has Nevada senators and the casino industry concerned.
"The bill is unbalanced and unfair," said Frank Fahrenkopf, American Gaming Association president, adding that it could even expand online gaming as it stands now since Indian casinos and horse and dog racing could still participate in online betting. [...]

Peak Entertainment Releases Survey Results |
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao -- In a move certain to call into question pre-conceived stereotypes and intuitive typecasts generally accepted as "facts" by society at large, Peak Entertainment, NV today released results of what may be the most comprehensive, unbiased and penetrating survey into the global community that's driving the estimated $4-6 billion online gambling industry. Based on the responses to a voluntary survey of 2008 active customers and compiled in a 33-page report, "The Online Casino Player: A Comprehensive Profile" paints an unprecedented portrait of the typical online casino player that's strikingly free of the negative images that, until now, have been freely attributed to this fledgling industry and relatively unchallenged.
Among the revelations included in the report are:
- Regardless of gender, the typical online casino player is most likely to be a mature, well-educated and solidly middle class head of household.
- The vast majority of both men and women online casino players say they do so for "entertainment / fun," on their "free" time from their own computers.
- While men say they prefer to play blackjack and women prefer slots, neither feel their favorite online activity is illegal or unethical and are highly aware of the time and money they spend online. [...]

Is Vegas To Get a 500kmph Rail Link Boost? |
Can an American project to build a high-speed, magnetically levitated train route succeed where two recent attempts in Europe have failed?
If so, in 2011 the Los Angeles basin in California could be linked by "maglev" to Las Vegas, 269 miles away in Nevada. Advocates say the route would energise the moribund US ground transport system, creating jobs and easing both road and air congestion. By 2018, they say, the maglev line could carry about 28m passengers a year between Anaheim and Las Vegas, one of the fastest-growing US cities.
Yet the price tag of $9bn (£5.6bn) represents a big gamble. Not only does the project come at a time of huge US budget deficits in the US but maglev - an idea current since the 1950s - has also proved to be an expensive dream elsewhere. [...]

Powerball Winner Gets Stolen $545K Back |
CROSS LANES, W.Va. - A Powerball winner who has donated more than $3 million of his record winnings to churches was drinking at a strip club when $545,000 was stolen from his sport utility vehicle, police said Tuesday.
Jack Whittaker said he hopes the incident will not affect the Jack Whittaker Foundation, which he established to help charities operated by the Church of God and other causes. He also said he wanted to remind the media and the public that he is a private citizen.
"I'm simply a businessman who has seen his share of failures and successes," Whittaker said. "My personal life is my own and I make no excuses for my actions."
Someone broke the driver's side window and took a briefcase containing $245,000 in cash and three $100,000 cashier's checks belonging to Whittaker, who hit Powerball's richest jackpot on Christmas Day, police said. The briefcase, cash and checks were found behind a nearby trash bin. [...]
