• Why More Seniors Are Gambling Online
James Bell, 67, a retired electrician from Seattle, Washington, admits that he probably spends at least an hour a day gambling online. "When there's little or nothing to watch on television," James says, "I'll usually turn on the computer, send a few e-mails, then play a few. Poker's my game."

James confesses that he's spending a little more than he's winning, but then he isn't worried that his gambling habits will ever become much of a problem. "I'm retired and I have a lot of free time on my hands," he says. "Okay, maybe I have more time than money, but I try keep things under control."

• Port Everglades temporarily adds third casino cruiseship
Broward County administrators have agreed to allow a third company to operate gambling cruises out of Port Everglades, at least temporarily.

Commissioners Lori Parrish and Sue Gunzburger also have asked whether the deal ignores a previous commission decision, which ordered county administrators to choose a third day-cruise operator through a competitive process, with the highest bidder getting the lease.

Port Director Ken Krauter signed an agreement last month with Southern Navigation LLC that allows the company to pick up and drop off passengers at the port through Oct. 15 on a ship called the St. Tropez. The company plans to begin operations in early April.

But Krauter and County Administrator Roger Desjarlais said the deal is different from the long-term leases held by Sea Escape and other port tenants. [...]

• The stakes just got raised for online PC gamers
DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- Players 18 years and older will soon be able to bet against foes while competing online in the World War II action game "Return to Castle Wolfenstein."

It's part of a deal between YouPlayGames and two Texas companies -- Even Balance, Inc. of Houston and Id Software, Inc. of Mesquite. Other online multiplayer games could be added later.

After registering with YouPlayGames, gamers can place wagers ranging from a few cents to a few dollars. Kill or injure an opponent and win that amount. Get killed or hurt and lose the cash.

No money limits have been set, but that could change, said YouPlayGames creator Chris Grove.

"If two players want to play a game for $100 a life, then we'll open up a server for that," he said. [...]
