• Lawmaker's 'Net Gambling Motives Questioned

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Chris Cannon calls gambling a "pernicious vice" that should be outlawed. But the Utah Republican repeatedly has fought to derail a bill that seeks to clamp down on illegal Internet gambling. Cannon says he tried to stop a bad bill that could legalize online wagering in his state -- one of two that prohibits all forms of gambling. Supporters of the legislation, which passed the House and is awaiting action in the Senate, believe he may have other motives. "You merely need to look at his record and where his funding comes from and follow the path," said Rev. Cynthia Abrams, of the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, which backed the bill. "I think there's a pretty clear connection there." Cannon has received $33,850 in political contributions since 2001 from Indian tribes with casinos, lobbyists for the online gambling industry and other opponents of the legislation, according to an analysis of his campaign finance disclosures. At times over the three intensive days delegates were faced with difficult decisions because more than one of the 31 sessions in the multi-track conference rooms of Montreal's huge Palais de Congres Montreal conference center interested them. After listening to major addresses such as "The Future of Interactive Gambling Around the World" delegates were faced with a selection of individual sessions under the broad headings of Payment, Marketing, Technology, Legal & Policy, Special Issues and Licensing. And in each of these categories top speakers and panels covered a range of interesting topics. • William Hill Forecasts Record Profits

William Hill says it expects to announce record interim profits, thanks to growth in customer spending across its gambling channels. The betting shop chain, which floated on the stock exchange last June, said that for the 26 weeks to July 1, profits before interest, tax and one-off costs would be more than £100 million. That compares with £80.1 million in the same half of 2002. In a pre-close statement ahead of its half year results due on September 8, William Hill said: "Subject to sporting results adhering to long term norms in the second half of 2003, the current trend in the group's trading performance would indicate a full year turn-out materially ahead of market expectations."
