William Hill sells 48 shops to Tote |
December 13, 2005 - William Hill is to sell 48 offices to the Tote for £20m after being told to give up 50 outlets following its purchase of 624 Stanley betting shops.
It adds to the 28 sites sold to the Tote in September, and takes the Tote's betting office estate to more than 500.
The Tote said it was "delighted" with the deal. Of the 48 offices bought 12 are William Hill branded offices and the remaining 36 are Stanley outlets.
William Hill paid £504m for the 624 Stanley shops in May this year.
However, after selling 28 sites to the Tote, it was then told by the Office of Fair Trading to sell about 50 more for competition reasons.
Northern offices
The new transaction takes the Tote's betting office presence to more than 500, including outlets at each of the 59 racecourses in Britain, plus internet and telephone betting forums.
"Unlike the first tranche, which were all former Stanley shops, this group includes 12 William Hill licensed betting shops," the Tote said.
Of the dozen William Hill sites, three are based around Edinburgh and Glasgow, one in Whitley Bay in Northumberland and one in Middlesbrough.
It takes the Tote's estate to 535 and there are plans to open at least five more branches by the end of January. |
