• Sporting News to Pay $7.2 Million in Ad Fines

JANUARY 23, 2006 - The Sporting News will shell out $7.2 million in a settlement with the U.S. Attorney's Office for accepting ads for illegal sports gambling phone services and Web sites. The sports weekly paid $4.2 million of the settlement on Friday, and will also complete a three year, $3 million public service campaign opposing illegal gambling services. “SN places a priority on its responsibilities under the law and its commitments to its customers. We are pleased to resolve this matter and look forward to continuing to provide high quality sports content in our print, radio, and online business units,” said Rick Allen, Sporting News CEO. The Sporting News ran the ads in question in its magazine, Web site and on the radio between spring 2000 and December 2003. The magazine says it promptly stopped accepting the promotions once notified that the government found them illegal. "The operation of a commercial gambling business where bets or wagers are transmitted in interstate or foreign commerce is illegal under federal law, and that includes Internet communications," said U.S. Attorney General Catherine Hanaway in a statement. The Sporting News is published by Vulcan Sports Media and has a rate base of 700,000. Circulation for the magazine remained flat at 713,158 for the first half of 2005, according to Audit Bureau of Circulations.
