UK College Offers Casino Classes to Students |
By Martin Wainwright
January 30, 2006 - Degree courses in roulette, blackjack and the other arts of casino management are to be offered for the first time in Britain at a specialist "gambling academy".
The new department at Blackpool and the Fylde college, close to the resort's Golden Mile, which is earmarked for a possible super-casino, will enlist its first 350 students at the end of next month.
They will take a curriculum accredited by City and Guilds with a choice of qualifications from GCSE to a foundation degree. Modules include the relatively exotic chance of training as a croupier to the more humdrum tasks of coin-in-the-slot machine engineering and repair. Classes will be held in a special "training casino" and at real gaming premises.
Blackpool has been in the forefront of developing casinos following relaxation of gambling laws and ahead of further reforms. Colleen McLaughlin, head of the new academy, said: "We want to give the best training in all aspects of casino work - a one-stop shop for all the industry's requirements." The academy has been backed by the gaming firm Gala Casinos, whose spokesman said: "The industry is changing rapidly. Part of that is educating people to work within the industry." |
