Italy blocks Malta's LGA site |
June 21, 2006 T he Italian government, in its quest to ban outside gaming sites, has blocked Malta's Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) official website, which linked viewers to 68 registered gaming sites in the region. Italy’s state administration for monopolies, the AAMS, concluded that the site had no authorisation to collect bets. LGA chief executive Mario Galea told delegates at last weeks European Forum of Gaming Regulations that it would not accept Italy's notion that all gambling websites held the same standards. "Malta’s websites are regulated by the official Maltese authority,” Galea said. George Debrincat,chair person of the Malta Remote Gaming Council (MRGC), told MaltaToday just before the move was announced: "We’re concerned that such a practice may set a dangerous precedent for the future." The MRGC have called Italy's attempts to halt its citizens from using their sites an attempt to "protect the Italian government’s monopoly which runs betting in Italy."
