Carruthers May Strike Plea Bargain |
August 22, 2006 – David Carruthers, the disgraced former chief executive officer of BetOnSports, is expected to strike a plea bargain with prosecutors to avoid a conviction for racketeering and fraud charges.
Carruthers was recently released on a $1 million bail but is currently under 'hotel arrest' in a Clayton, Missouri due to bail restrictions which prevent him from leaving his hotel except for a medical emergency and his court appearances. Carruthers is currently wearing an ankle bracelet to monitor his whereabouts.
Business law professor Joseph Kelly believes the prosecutors in Carruthers' case are really after information on Gary Kaplan, the founder of BetOnSports, who has been charged with 20 felony violations and is being pursued by the FBI. The professor, also an online gambling expert said that, 'Once the plea is reached, Carruthers would cooperate with the prosecutors and disclose everything.'
The first hearing in Carruthers' trial was scheduled for yesterday, however Kelly believed the case wouldn't go that far. 'It's overwhelmingly probable that the government doesn't want to bring Carruthers to court,' he said. 'They really want him to plea bargain and turn over information on Kaplan.' |
