Peter Dicks resigns as chairman, allowed back to UK |
September 15, 2006 – Peter Dicks resigned as chairman of online gaming firm Sportingbet hours before New York governor George Pataki withdrew the warrant for his detention, allowing him to return to the UK.
Sportingbet said that it had received his resignation with 'great reluctance' and that he was leaving the company to concentrate on 'personal matters'. The gaming company said it would appoint a new independent non-executive chairman shortly.
Dicks, who commented he was 'very pleased' at returning to the UK, had his passport returned at the 10-minute hearing in New York, but must return to the US on September 28th for a hearing on his extradition to Louisiana. One of his lawyers, Barry Slotnick, claimed that the case would go no further.
"I believe this case should and will end here," he said. "It is very unusual for a governor to overturn a warrant so it appears he listened to our argument that Mr Dicks has not committed any crime in Louisiana."
Shares in Sportingbet jumped on the news, spiking at 191p, while Sportingbet said it would continue operating as normal, and continue to accept bets from the US. |
